This PDF digital download includes bilingual Montessori Puzzle Words — words that cannot be fully decoded using phonetic rules alone. These are the words children must learn to recognize as whole words because they don't follow predictable spelling patterns.
Unlike sequential materials, Puzzle Words are a parallel lesson within the Mechanics of Reading. They can be introduced at any point once the child begins encountering these words in their reading, alongside their regular phonetic work.
The material is organized into three sets per language, progressing from essential high-frequency words to more advanced spelling patterns:
Spanish Sets:
- Set 1: Essential high-frequency words — articles, pronouns, connectors, silent h words, and common irregular spellings
- Set 2: Spelling rules — silent h, accent marks that change meaning, homophones, and silent u in gu
- Set 3: Advanced patterns — diéresis (ü), b/v same sound, c/s/z same sound, and x pronounced as j
English Sets:
- Set 1: Essential irregular sight words (the, said, one, does, there, etc.)
- Set 2: Common irregular patterns — all, -ome, -ould, and wh- question words
- Set 3: Spelling pattern keys — silent w in wr, silent b in -mb, -ng, ph as f, silent k in kn, -ough, -tion, and more
